2.1. About Math Placement for First Year Students
Math Placement Resources for Advisors or HS Teachers → Math Placement Resources for High School Math Teachers → About Math Placement for First Year Students
For incoming traditional (right out of high school) first year students, we use recent SAT/ACT math score, appropriate level dual enrollment math courses, or our math assessment (PPL) for placement.
Math Placement is a required component of the incoming student registration process.
You can find a U of A Math Placement overview here.
If you are a high school math teacher, or interact with high school students, how can you help? Remind students to:
- Send Official SAT/ACT scores to U of A so they can be used for math placement.
- Unofficial scores can be sent to the Math Placement Office, if official scores are not posted on the student's account a week prior to their orientation date.
- Know how to access their college dual enrollment transcript
- Official college transcripts must be sent to U of A to receive credit.
- Unofficial college transcripts can be sent to the Math Placement Office if the credit is not on the student's Transfer Credit Report a week prior to their orientation date.
Incoming students have access to a portal called the Next Steps Center. The Next Steps Center walks the student through several items including Math, Second Language, and Writing Placement. Students should send official SAT, ACT, AP, and other scores to the University of Arizona, but can submit unofficial scores through the math placement section of their Next Steps Center.
